Twisting the state and the national constitution into a banning mechanism regarding sexual preference is deeply dangerous, for reasons obvious to most adults.
Barring further court actions, the state will present to Tennessee voters a proposal to change our constitution and ban certain consting adults from marrying. I'll vote no on that. I hope you do too. Efforts to alter the national constitution in the same way are also underway.
This is idiocy on so many levels, wasteful too. If you don't see that - nothing I say could open your sealed-shut eyes.
More on this topic via KnoxViews and Congressman Lincoln Davis' comments are here. And with all due respect to Congressman Davis - satire and lampoonery in speeches on the House floor are sometimes difficult to discern. But yeah, I get it. This is ridiculous legislation.
Mike Silence offers some more on the issue here. More comments and discussion are at NiT.
Being afraid of rights between consenting adults based on their sexual behavior says far more about you than you know.
These proposed ammendments stick the government's nose so far under the bedroom sheets we should see this as a perverted invasion of privacy.
I have just a two words to Americans who want to empower a Nanny Government to dictate every molecule of human behavior - Stop it.
UPDATE: Another viewpoint which express it better than I do here.
You're no slouch on the topic yourself. I particularly liked "Being afraid of rights between consenting adults based on their sexual behavior says far more about you than you know."
ReplyDeletewell thanks, joe.
ReplyDeletethat seems kind of obvious to me ... but apparently there are some deeply repressed people out there.
As I've pointed out for years, and what was so well stated by TVA at NSH, marriage in America as far as government is concerned is a legal contract, not a spiritual one. The pact you make with "God" (assuming you are married in some sort of religious ceremony) is entirely separate from the contract you make with the City, State, and Federal governments regarding your marital status. Now, if the powers that be are denying consenting adults the same rights and privalages (or responsibilities) that other consenting adults have, then we have a problem.
ReplyDeleteI don't approve of 50-year-old men marrying 18-year-old girls. I find it reprehensable, sad, and somewhat stomach churning. But it's legal. Unless Congress is willing to change marriage laws to either A) wipe away all the legal largess afforded married couples so as to even the playing field for EVERYONE or B) do as Lincoln Davis suggests and commit married couples for life and penalize them for straying. I think you'd see a lot less married people (gay and straight) under the latter provisions.
Correction/Addition:
ReplyDeleteI meant to say:
Unless Congress is willing to change marriage laws to either A) wipe away all the legal largess afforded married couples so as to even the playing field for EVERYONE or B) do as Lincoln Davis suggests and commit married couples for life and penalize them for straying, then suggesting laws that deny right to some is simply wrong. Of course, I think you'd see a lot less married people (gay and straight) under the latter provisions.
