The proof of the power of words continues to swirl in the "Secret City" over the infamous high school editorial. According to the Knox News-Sentinel, (reg. required) the offending (and accurate) information about birth control has been replaced with an Editorial about a play being performed at the school - Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest". Now that's just too funny!
The censorship and outrage and the publicity have likely made the student's comments become much more widely read and discussed than anyone may have imagined possible.
Say Uncle has some good points on the issue - as well as mentioning that the issue will be debated on WBIR-TV this weekend.
Just imagine the uproar if the article had been about the merits of evolution vs. creationism (I refuse to grant the right wingers the satisfaction of allowing a semantic change to ID). Adults seem to want to stick their heads in the sand and prtend that teens are not sexual and have no sexual thoughts until the magic age of 18. They are then, I suppose, granted with all of the knowledge they need by the same intelligence responsible for our presence on this planet.
ReplyDeleteHave any of these idiots opposing this article ever been teenagers, or did they just fly out of the womb as adults?
Information is dangerous. Information leads to knowledge and that can lead to a person developing opinions and challenging the status quo. That just does no good for our society. Imagine the horror of living in a society where issues are actually debated. OOOOHHH! Scary boys and girls.
I'm glad I had Judy Blume!
ReplyDeleteOh God!!!
ReplyDeleteJudy Blume seriously ROCKED!
I remember being in 8th grade, and all us gals trying to get a copy of her adult novel, Wifey.
It had detailed sexual description in it.
Just Awesome!
